The source of inspiration to this work is from the artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser. Students reviewed Hundertwasser’s paintings and architectural buildings. They then created Hundertwasser inspired drawings from the school campus. This project works well with middle through high school level students. Check out the resource section to assist you with this project.


You will need to create and design three drawings for an entranceway. The use of placement, composition, and size of the designs and shapes will play an important role in each of the drawings.

First make a list of different types of entranceways you want to consider to design and draw. These entranceways could be from different cultures, times in history, foreign lands or planets! Such examples could be a entranceway to a dungeon, sports arena, arts theater, beach resort, space ship, under water hideaway, farm, high tech mansion, the possibilities are endless.

There are several things to consider when designing and drawing your entranceways. First, think about what the main feature or focal point of the entranceway will be. Columns, windows, and illustrations of things that refer to the place in which the person enters are good examples. Use a lot of detail in the lines, shapes, and patterns of your entranceway.

Look at and use the laminated examples to help you develop your drawings.Once you have created your three drawings of the entranceways, choose one of the designs to write about in your black sketchbook. Write a detailed story of this entranceway. Things to include in this story are: Where is this entranceway located, who uses this entranceway, describe what the entranceway is made from (gold, wood, metal, glass, plastic), why was it made, who made it, who can enter, how large is this entranceway, where does it lead to.


These examples were created by students that have some type of indication of the element of the figure included.

Plant holder

A series of coils were created and attached to the inside, or outside of a plant holder covered in plastic wrap. This provides the students with a mold to form and bond the coils they create. The outside areas were adorned with floral clay designs that were scored and slipped.


Starting from a clay slab, students use a coil to create a lip in order to produce a tray. Additional additive and reductive methods add to the final design.
