Power of the Poster

This project you will be creating a design inspired by poster art.  To help introduce you to the history of poster art please review the following links on poster art: poster connectionvisual arts corkdzine press

There are a variety of choices of art movements and styles to choose from that have been covered in poster art. Some examples are as follows: Art Nouveau, Art Deco, Belle Epoque, Pre-Raphaelites, Surrealism, Expressionism, Op-Art, German Plakatstil (poster style), Scotland’s Glasgow School, Austria’s Vienna Secession, Russian Constructivists, Bauhaus, de Stijl, Futurism, Dadaism, Sachplakat (object poster style) Cappiello Style, International Typographic Style, 1950’s style, and Post-Modernism.

Below are some links that will help you decide which style to choose: internationalposterart-nouveau-poster-designslawrence.edu/library.

Think about what type of theme you would like to use for your project. There are a number themes to choose from: Travel and Leisure, Olympics and Sports, War and Propaganda, Publications, Food and Drink, Social Concerns, Festivals, Film, Music, Politics, Fashion, Fairs & Exhibitions, Galleries, Products, Retail, Transportation.

Wikipedia has a quite involve description of what propaganda is and propaganda techniques to help you influence and inspire conformity to your cause.

Included are some additional links to help inspire you are your theme: london transport museum, gig posters.

The principle of design focus for this project is movement, please familiarize yourself with the concepts associated with this principle.

Think about what type of poster you want to produce from the idea plans above. You will be creating a three color linoleum print, so that means that you will be carving into the linoleum three times and adding a color each time for a total of four colors in the design. Again, if you are using text, be sure it will be transferred onto the linoleum backwards.

Postcards

First, investigate and research the history of the postcard (Pioneer Era, Private Mailing Card Era, Undivided Back Era, Divided Back Era, White Border Era, Linen Card Era, Photo Chrome Era) within your journal. Explain the important factors to the evolution from each era to the present and try to document examples from each era.

Next, find several well-designed and poorly designed examples of current postcards, and explain their strengths and weaknesses in order to assist you in the development of your ideas.

Finally, you are to create a series of postcards that highlight main tourist attractions to a single country.  The content to each postcard can consist upon the country as a whole, individual cities, a combination of cities, or specific attractions within your chosen country.

Once you have chosen a country as the subject to this assignment, you will need to research points of interest of that region. Things to consider within your investigation:
· Cultural attractions (mount saint michel, wine country, birth of jazz)
· Arts and Entertainment (the symphony center, disney world, wembley stadium)
· Sightseeing locations (eiffel tower, turkish baths, the magnificent mile)
· Historical landmarks (great wall of china, the colosseum, ankor wat)
· Scenic landmarks (the grand canyon, the alps, the blue mountains)
· Unique features (longest river, highest peak, largest lake, most hot springs, largest population, specific wildlife)
· Natural attractions (mountains, barrier reefs, water falls, caverns, fjords, canyons)
· Festivals and Rituals (water festival, day of the dead, homowo festival)
· Key/Catch phrases associated with a place (“the meeting place for sun worshipers”/ Cancun, Mexico; “when they’ve reached the top, send them to the peak”/ Victoria Peak, Hong Kong)

Gather and collect visuals for these research points for the content to your postcards.

Use the following criteria from the elements and principles of design to complete this project:
· One postcard displays radial symmetry within the design
· One postcard displays dominance within the design
· One postcard displays continuance within the design
· One postcard displays approximate horizontal symmetry within the design

Also include within one of each example of the following elements:
· One postcard displays a simulated texture
· One postcard displays a monochromatic use of color
· One postcard displays free flowing lines
· One postcard displays a free form text block

Each postcard will need to be designed for a front and back. You may create one design for a back and repeat it for the other cards. You may also use any of the criteria listed above for either side of the postcard design.

Before you begin to create these examples within the program of Photoshop, you first will need to create sketches of various combinations of the criteria requirements that will best suit your design style. Be sure to use color pencils and correct drawn proportions to each of the elements in your design in order to achieve the closest finished effect for your ideas. Once you have completed your sketches, begin to combine the various elements from your research to build your postcard.

For each postcard, the size of the document will be 4.25 inches by 6 inches, resolution of 200 dpi, and saved as a TIFF. file format. Ensure that there will be no mistake to what the postcard is advertising (names to locations are a necessity).

First Due Date- Thursday September 16th
· The history of the postcard completed
· The country for the subject of your postcard chosen
· Information collected and resources gathered for that chosen country
· 2 of the 4 thumbnail sketches completed

Everyone will be sharing the work from their journal during the class session, so make sure the above content is displayed within your journal.

Print out all images from your research, include text and phrases you are considering to include within your work, and cite all sources you have found.

Power of the poster

For this project you will be investigating the history of poster designreview and analyze four examples of poster art using rhythm, design a poster reflecting an art movement, and create a series of two art posters based on a theme of your choice.

· Investigate and research the history of poster art. Be sure to include the early history leading up to today, as well as, various movements and styles. Be sure to include visuals to support this research.
